The Book of Battles is divided into 4 chapters, each with a different approach. Some chapters introduce new special rules, covering specific situations, terrain elements or components such as rivers, objective markers, reinforcements, etc. All are based on a new victory point system, divided into three parts: massacre points, survival points and conquest points. Generally, each scenario uses only one of these systems, but at least one scenario in the book combines them all.Link: Announcement on Kickstarter
Congo Mary: The Throne of Thunder is a complete campaign for Congo, Adventures in the Heart of Africa. Congo Mary recounts one of the heroic journeys of British explorer Mary Kingsley. It culminates with her ascension of Mount Camaroon - also known as the Throne of Thunder.Link: Foundry Miniatures
Each Adventure presents a unique situation, which will provide its share of incidents and tensions. Due to their nature, they have a great replayability, and you will certainly some game before getting a grasp on all possible approaches and strategies for each adventure.Link: Studio Tomahawk
During these Adventures, you will lead a column taken from on of the 4 cultures presented in the game: White Men Expedition, the Sultanate of Zanzibar, the Forest Tribes and the African Kingdoms. Each culture has its own troops, characters and special rules.
A column is generally made of 20-30 miniatures, and adventures only require a small gaming surface (120cm x 90cm) to be played. Thus, if the scenery items are an essential part of the fun of the game, the table surface will not require a disproportionate investment to provide a satisfactory framework for your games.
Congo takes the shape of a book (hardcover) 108 pages, full color. Inserted in the book you will find 8 Adventures and a dangerous terrain cardboard sheet. In addition to the book, your retailer will hand you a bag containing the deck of cards needed to play, and a punchboard with the tokens needed for the game and that also includes the measuring sticks. Not included in the game, you will need some dice (D6, D8 and D10) miniatures (available as Column boxes for each culture) and some scenery to start your adventure!
The story of the colonisation of the Congo start in the around 1870 when Leopold II, King of Belgium decides to invest his own personnal wealth in a series of expeditions that would establish outposts of his dreamed colonial empire.Link: Studio Tomahawk
In the following years, the great colonial nations of Europe (France, Great-Britain and Germany) all converged toward the heart of Africa, in an attempt to grab their share of the Congo’s wealth. Afraid of the consequences of their competition for this part of Afica, all these European powers agreed to give the Congo to Leopold II during the conference of Berlin in 1885.
Another decade will pass before this country will be fully explored, its frontiers fixed and the Zanzibaris slavers expulsed.
Congo offers you the unique opportunity to take part to the exploration of this country, before the private companies and military forces arrive to plunder and wreak havoc. It’s a time when explorers, adventurers and scientists decided to risk their life and reputation to chart the uncharted, unveil mysteries and myths, and faced the natives and the terrible North African slavers.
Congo is a miniature adventure game that uses the magical, unexplored, savage, and dangerous “Dark Africa” as its playground, as the occidentals dreamt it at this time.
During the game you will lead a scientific expedition, a fierce tribal war party or a group of Zanzibaris slavers, each with their won schedules.
You will need around 30 figures to play the game. In addition to the various troops at your disposal, you will be able to add some larger than life and colourful characters as a newspaper correspondant, a big game hunter, the colonel’s daughter, a withdoctor or a tribal warchief.
In the heart of Congo you will find the adventures. In the game you will face the Great Ape venerated by a cannibal tribe, you will have to discover the fate of Pr. Fergusson expedition and what happened to his aerostat and will get hunt down some explorers in the jungle with your ruga-ruga bandits.

Some of you might know that Lord S has been working hard with his bestest chums at Studio Tomahawk (including Alex 'Mr SAGA' Buchel at the helm) on a brand new game called Jugula. It's a game that puts the players into the role of a Lanista, running their own Ludus (Gladiator business) and entering their growing Familia into more and more bloody fights in the arena, all the while juggling business and skullduggery in the quest for personal glory and wealth. Well, it's nearing completion and almost ready for printing. Pop over to the Studio Tomahawk blog and (unless your French is good) scroll down to read some more with a few exclusive photos too.
A range of 35mm multi-part Gladiators is being released for use with the game and jolly nice they are too. Here are some test castings painted by top chum Darren Linington.
