I'm confused by this (and many Kickstarters). I see that the design is done, the product is shown fully assembled in the photo. It seems 100% ready to sell. What is the kickstarter for? Why not just start selling the stuff right now? This comment/question is not directly aimed at just this company,,, lots of people do this, they seem to have a product ready to sell and then for some reason, rather than just start selling it, they launch a kickstarter to raise funds for ??I don't know??. Has kickstarter just become a selling platform for people that do not have online stores instead of what it used to be, a fundraising platform?
I guess for many people KS is about risk minimization. Additionally, having prototypes or even production samples may not mean they have the funds to just produce a couple of hundred units. Last but not least, KS shows you if people want your product at all.
I haven't looked into this specific example, but sometimes KS is misused as a fancy pre-order system.
