Man, this game looks really cool. I managed to get my hands on the rule book, cuz sadly that seems to be the only way you can find out about how the game works- the official website is flat-out awful, and doesn't tell you ANYTHING about the game's mechanics whatsoever.
Add that to the fact that, despite how friggin' awesome the ruleset is (basically a giant sandbox-style of game where you can wage war on land, sea and in the air), there's not a lot of bloggers out there talking about it, it's hard to find out much.
If I didn't write a post asking my readers for help finding out stuffs, I wouldn't be plotting on picking up a couple of starter sets.
Spartan themselves are not doing much to sell the game to those who don't already play it. Their website is not at all helpful to those who come there looking for info about how the game plays.
If it wasn't for my readers hooking me up, I would've crossed Dystopian Wars off my list of potential new games.
I've had the itch lately to play a 'massive scale' battle game, with giant mechs and flying thingies, waging war on a gigantic level. Dystopian Wars looks like just the thing, but when I hit the website, all it says is 'Dystopian Wars is a fun game with a ruleset designed to allow players to play a game in a couple of hours using detailed miniatures.'
Ummm...ok, great, but how does the turn sequence work? How is movement handled? How do I build a list? How about some decent pics of the models- the 'Gallery' on their webpage features pictures of battlegroups that are just computer renderings. Not actual pics of models even.
Sigh.
Ah, well, maybe I'll hit their forums soon and let 'em know they need to do a better job of luring gamers in. Dystopian Wars is the only game I know of that fills the little void left behind by 'Epic Armageddon.' It works on a similar scale, it uses tiny 1/1000 scale (or thereabouts) minis, and it allows gamers to play with things the size of a Titan, and wreak the kinda destruction that a Titan would, without having to deal with models that are over a foot tall...
The game has solid mechanics, and open-ended rules that will allow me to play out any kind of crazy scenario I can dream up- massive amphibious landings with tanks and mechs, flying airships like the thing from the Avengers movie launching waves of torpedo bombers to attack enormous flotillas of capital ships and their escorts...
It just looks so cool...I wish the website did it justice...
