would be better if all bloggers maintained silence about GW for a month or two as a protest. When GW see how their sales fall they might act more sensibly.
I don't think it's the promoting their product for free GW has a problem with but with the posting 19 photographs from the White Dwarf before it is out. On a pretty much monthly basis no less. That is a bit more then 'fair use' even for news and opinion.
If you posted the first 22 minutes of The Hobbit on your blog a few days before release you would get hit with a bit more then the 'ban hammer'. That certain news sites are doing the same with WD content isn't any different imho...
Don't get me wrong, I don't like a lot of the GW policies, but you can't blame GW for doing this...
I think Cergorach hit it on the head. Its not posting stuff about releases when they come out, but rather before GW announces them and even retyping portions of white dwarves for easier reading.
Perhaps so, but in that case GW should quite simply make certain the distribution on their end is under control and not have the German WD hit 1+ week before the official release data every damn month ;-)
19 Photos from an upcoming issue of White Dwarf are still 19 images promoting Games Workshops newest products. While GW clearly is owning this photos and can use legal measures to prevent others from using them, it is just a stupid move to prevent someone from promoting your stuff FOR FREE.
Because GW does not make money with pictures, they make money with miniatures. Okay, getting preview pictures of upcoming products on the net makes a huge part of the content of any White Dwarf obsolete, but... people spending money to see advertisments never made sense in the firstplace...
I will wait and see what the affected people have to say - for example, if they received a slap on the wrist first or if their sites were just gone without warning.
My reaction is pure precaution, GW was never a prominent player here (intentionally) and I am sure nobody will really miss them.
I am more concerned that 70% of my visitors came directly from BolS :)
I wouldn't worry, you only ever use their own marketting after its been released, not spoilers or rumours, so I doubt they'd have a problem, but yeah, this is a great blog for seeing other companies out there, GW info is everywhere, this is a great place to collate everything else, its cost me a lot of money though!
Don't worry about it buddy! You're doing an awesome job with the blog, and the reason why I check on it a few times a day is that you don't post a whole lot of GW news. Keep up the great work! :-)
As a single man who owns a very small company and who knows other people responsible for other known small companies, I will say that we all love your blog!
And as someone who wants unique miniatures of the sort Games Workshop don't produce, such as human women who aren't power armoured nuns, I love all the small companies out there. I also love all the companies who produce conversion bits.
Games Workshop may be big, but it has a lot to learn from the "little businesses" IMO
I second the other voices here that say your blog isn't good because of the GW stuff, it's great because you post stuff that no one would hear about otherwise . If GW wants to play shenanigans, that's fine, b/c there are dozens of other good companies out there with great product.
I love this blog because its not GW - if i want to see the GW stuff its on their well known sites and their well known magazine :) keep it up for the little guys :)
The service you provide here is simply awesome. And I really don't the think the community will bat an eyelash for the lack of GW. Although I am curious, will this include the GW/FFG rpgs?
At the moment the FFG-articles are gone because I removed everything with the labels mentioned.
FFG was always good to me and sponsored several give-aways and they will be part of the news in the future. If I have time I will put the FFG articles I removed back online.
I only play 40k but I love all sorts of minis and am into the hobby to paint the minis mostly. therefore I love your blog. by far my favourite. i'll get gw news (should I want it) from their website. meanwhile keep posting all the awesome stuff that you currently do.
If you didn't add GW product back in, it wouldn't be missed...and I play GW games. They don't need the free press, the smaller, friendlier companies are more deserving of your time.
Right move to ignore these blokes from now on and another good move to continue featuring FFGs Warhammer-related stuff!
(A different but far more radikal and aggressive move would be to feature every single new product GW presents by posting pictures of their §"$%$&"§-Minotaurs instead.)
Well, having read all the comments on this post, I think you can work out where most of us stand! Your blog is important to us for all the information you provide, and long may it continue- with or without GW. Personally, I can manage quite happily without them, but I do know they have a massive following, so that's all fine and dandy. However, there is no point in you getting into unnecessary strife, so I don't blame you for this course of action. We're all behind you and your blog is brilliant!
Just to echo the majority of other posters; I come here for the non-GW news.
I really appreciate the work you do for this blog. It's great to have an independent news source, and I think, very important for the community as a whole.
What is the reason for this?
ReplyDeleteFaeit212 and BoLS are unavailable, Faeit assumingly due to a direct complain from GW to blogger.
ReplyDeleteStatus of Bell of lost Souls is unknown atm, but I am not taking any risks. Especially not for GW.
Ah, now I understand, can't say that I'm surprised at all when it comes to GW, too bad they have to be so derpy...
ReplyDeleteAnyways, I don't visit your blog for the GW stuff ;) Keep up the awesome work, your blog has widened my wargaming horizons quite a bit!
fully agree!!!
DeleteWell done, we have reached upon a point that they are totally ungrateful for the service these blogs provide. Good riddance to them.
ReplyDeleteLove your blog by the way keep up the great work.
Glad to hear that :)
ReplyDeleteI stopped posting rumors/leaks a long time ago, but still - better not risk anything until the smoke clears and we know what is going on.
We've all got those letters) One in the struggle!
ReplyDeletewould be better if all bloggers maintained silence about GW for a month or two as a protest. When GW see how their sales fall they might act more sensibly.
ReplyDeleteBetter safe than sorry, besides there are plenty of companies out there that do deserve the exposure!
ReplyDeleteHow can you be so bold/stupid to go after the people who promote your product for free...
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I start working on the update for today.
I don't think it's the promoting their product for free GW has a problem with but with the posting 19 photographs from the White Dwarf before it is out. On a pretty much monthly basis no less. That is a bit more then 'fair use' even for news and opinion.

I can and I will.
DeleteWell, you can, but you're being very silly and immature if you do.
DeleteI think Cergorach hit it on the head. Its not posting stuff about releases when they come out, but rather before GW announces them and even retyping portions of white dwarves for easier reading.

Your blog is an excellent place to see what companies I've never heard of produce. That is why I'm a regular to ttfix.
ReplyDeleteAs long as you can still post FFG's 40kRPG books, I won't miss anything GW here.
As others have said: "better safe than sorry"
I'd much rather hear about non-GW stuff anyway, so no great loss :-) Keep up the awesome work!!
ReplyDeleteI will wait and see what the affected people have to say - for example, if they received a slap on the wrist first or if their sites were just gone without warning.

ReplyDeleteGood! Lets plug those companies that want their products to be supported by its fans and customers. Just another reason I gave up GW so long ago.
ReplyDeleteBrian

ReplyDeleteHey dude, like you blog (very useful btw ;) ), but as long as you don't post pics of minis before their release, it's legally fine.
ReplyDeleteWhichever is the firm which releases it, GW or any other...
At the moment the FFG-articles are gone because I removed everything with the labels mentioned.

ReplyDeleteSoooo, you going to take that Cadian off your logo?
ReplyDeleteYou're kidding me right? That could be a future armoured trooper from any one of a number of games systems.
DeleteHow can you tell he's Canadian? Does he say 'Aye' a lot? :)
DeleteLol, if I get into trouble over this little bugger I'll sue goatboy who was paid for a non-IP-infringing logo :)
DeleteI hope the part about you paying him for that was part of the gag.
DeleteNice work. I am spreading the word as well. Keep it up
ReplyDeleteJust to echo the majority of other posters; I come here for the non-GW news.

Keep fighting the good fight!
(p.s. thank you again for the Flower Knight!!!)
Good to hear, other companies need the exposure far more than our niche hobbies corporate overlords do.
